Biography

Jasmine B. Y. Sim is Associate Professor and Head of the Policy, Curriculum, and Leadership Department at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She holds a PhD from the University of Sydney, a Master of Education from Harvard, and a Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University of Wellington, all earned through prestigious scholarships. An internationally recognised scholar in civics, citizenship, and social studies education, Jasmine also teaches curriculum theory and, ethics and leadership in education.

In 2013, she received the World Cultural Council Award for her early international impact. Jasmine has delivered keynotes and invited presentations globally and has published extensively. Her article, ‘Notions of Criticality: Singaporean Teacher Perspectives of Critical Thinking in Social Studies’, won the Cambridge Journal of Education Best Paper Award in 2009. She has secured several research grants and serves as Regional Editor for Citizenship Teaching and Learning. Jasmine also sits on the editorial boards of the book series Moral Development and Citizenship Education and Curriculum and School Development in Asia. She serves on the advisory committee for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the Education University of Hong Kong.

Abstract:

National Education is an important component of values education in schools, with an objective to nurture young people into quality citizens who have a sense of belonging to our country, a sense of national identity and social responsibility. National Identity is listed in one of the seven learning goals of across primary and secondary education of Hong Kong.

National Education covers various interlocking areas, including Chinese history and our nation’s development, Chinese culture, geography, Constitution and Basic Law education, as well as National Security Education. Learning elements of National Education are infused in various subjects, such as General Studies for primary schools, Chinese History as well as Citizenship and Social Development for secondary schools.
